Kukui Trail is one of the best short hikes that you can take on the island of Kauai. This hike is very similar to the Waimea Canyon hike. Both of these are very close to the Waimea Canyon Overlook which is one of the nicest views that you will see in the Hawaiian Islands. However, it is much nicer to descend into this Canyon, taking you down about 2000 feet, all the way to the bottom. This will take you directly to the Koaie Canyon Trail, at which point you will turn back around. Otherwise, you would had south. You will start near Kekaha, Hawaii, after traveling up Kokee Road. This is why you should consider doing the Kukui Trail, a hike that is something you can accomplish in a single morning or afternoon.
This trail will allow you to see the west side of Waimea Canyon. Going through the forest of Kukui, there will be several areas where you can see not only the waterfalls, but even better views of the canyon. You should be prepared for rain, which can happen from time to time, which is why it is recommended that you start early. It is recommended that you spend a few hours once you reach the bottom to take pictures, enjoy the scenery, and have a big lunch. That will allow you to keep going, all the way back up, which can be tough on this hike if you are not in good shape.
How To Prepare For Your Hike
One thing to prepare for is the hike back up. You will start to get apprehensive as you are heading down as it doesn’t seem to come to an end. There are going to be parts of the hike, especially if you start in the late morning, that are going to be extremely hot so bring lots of water. However, once you are done with the hike and back at the top, you will be glad that you went on the Kukui Trail on Kauai.
