The Kalalau Trail is one of the best hikes that you can do on the island of Kauai. It is on the northern portion of the island. Although this is a smaller island, it provides some of the most beautiful vistas that you will ever see, and this hike is definitely representative of that. It is almost 20 miles, and despite the long length, it is moderately trafficked. It is an out and back hike, one that is very challenging, taking you up over 9000 feet in elevation. Let’s look at the The Kalalau Trail and why you should consider doing this when you visit Kawai.
The Kalalau Trail
One of the main attractions of this particular hike is the beautiful waterfall that you will see as a result of doing this hike. There are also many different locations where you can take pictures of the coast. If you are an experienced hiker, this should not be a problem at all, though it will be challenging. You will start at sea level at Ke’e Beach after driving to the very end of the road that goes up the North Shore. Once you are on the trail, you will start climbing up onto this trail which is very close to the ocean. Once you come to the end of the hike, you are going to see Hanakapi’ai Falls which is the reward you will receive. It is 300 feet high, and is certainly one of the nicest waterfalls on the island of Kauai, one that you can photograph for your scrapbook when you come back.
Things To Watch Out For
You are going to get very tired along the hike. There are resting spots along the way. Bring plenty of water and food with you, and also watch out for slippery rocks that are at intermittent locations. Be careful as you are walking on the trail because you could slide down. However, the view of the ocean is absolutely impressive. It is a hike that everyone should do at least once, and if you are on the island of Kauai anytime soon, definitely consider doing the Kalalau Trail.
